Temporary Galleries - British Museum – Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum

DHA Designs were flattered to be asked to light the final and most prestigious of the Round Reading Room exhibitions, Pompeii and Herculaneum.  Running for six months, it was a collection of artefacts rarely seen in the UK, and some never displayed before.  Unusually the exhibition focuses on  the life in Pompeii and Herculaneum, with astonishingly preserved frescoes, jewellery and sculpture.

LAND Design Studio’s exhibition design recreated a Roman villa to include several rooms, a garden and street.  Rather than simply light an exhibition, DHA Designs’ concept was to compliment the design by lighting the spaces rather than the objects: ‘exterior’ spaces were brightly lit with cool white light, with the interior spaces varying in levels but using warmer, dimmer light.  The final area which dealt with the destruction and contained body casts were sensitively and gently lit.
